Introduction

Optically Variable Ink (OVI), also known as chameleon ink, is a high-end anti-counterfeit printing material based on multi-layer optical interference pigments. It does not rely on UV or fluorescence: simply by changing the viewing angle, the ink color visibly and reversibly shifts, instantly recognizable to the naked eye — the mainstream technology for high-end security printing worldwide.

How It Works

Multi-layer metal oxide thin films interfere with, reflect and absorb light: light entering at different angles reflects different wavelengths, so the color changes in real time with the viewing angle.

Features

  • No light source needed — works in natural and indoor light
  • Extremely hard to counterfeit with lasting effect
  • Copy-proof: photocopies cannot reproduce the color shift
  • Premium look that elevates brand image

Applications

  • Banknotes, passports, invoices and security documents
  • Anti-counterfeit labels and seals for tobacco & liquor
  • Luxury and cosmetic packaging

Frequently Asked Questions

Selection, detection, printing and ordering — answered.

Does OVI need special equipment to verify?
No. Under natural or indoor light, simply tilting the print reveals a clear, reversible color shift that any consumer can see — a "public" level of security. Photocopies and scans cannot reproduce the shift, giving strong copy protection.
Which color combinations are available?
Common pairs include green-to-blue, gold-to-green and purple-to-brown. The start/end colors and the viewing angle of the transition can be specified in the design; special pairs depend on multi-layer optical pigment availability and minimum order.
Where is OVI mainly used?
High-end security printing such as banknotes, passports and invoices; anti-counterfeit labels and seals for tobacco and liquor packaging; and luxury, cosmetic and nutraceutical packaging where premium look and security are both required.
What printing process is used? Is consumption high?
Mainly screen printing, with offset and gravure also possible. OVI is relatively expensive, so it is normally applied as a local security feature rather than full-surface coverage. Confirm the printed area and process first, then calculate consumption and cost.
How does OVI compare with laser holograms and thermochromic ink?
OVI shifts color with viewing angle, needs no equipment and is copy-proof; holograms rely on reflective gratings — cheaper but very widely used; thermochromic ink reacts to temperature. The three can be combined for a multi-layer security system. See our OVI vs laser guide for a detailed comparison.
