Introduction
Glow-in-the-dark ink (also called luminous or phosphorescent ink) uses non-radioactive rare-earth long-afterglow pigments as its light source. The printed film absorbs and stores energy from daylight or UV light, then glows yellow-green or blue-green on its own in the dark — no power and no battery, in a reversible absorb-and-glow cycle with a long service life.
How It Works
Once excited by light, electrons in the long-afterglow pigment jump to an excited state and fall back slowly, releasing energy as visible light — so the glow continues after the light source is removed. Brightness decays exponentially over time: more complete charging and a thicker coating give longer afterglow.
Features
- No power needed — charges by day, glows at night
- Reversible, repeatable charge-and-glow cycle
- Non-radioactive rare-earth material, safe and eco-friendly
- Highly visible in the dark for night-time applications
Processes & Substrates
Mainly screen and offset printing, on paper, card, plastic, metal, glass and fabric. Coating thickness can be adjusted to balance afterglow brightness against printing cost.
Applications
- Safety markings: stair edges, escape routes, fire exits
- Toys, stationery and creative products
- Eye-catching packaging effects and gifts
- Night-visible labels and outdoor gear marking
