Thermochromic ink (heat-changing ink) and photochromic ink (daylight color-change ink) are two easily confused color-changing security inks: the first changes color with temperature, the second with light. Thermochromic Ink: Temperature-Driven Color Change
Thermochromic ink works through microencapsulated heat-sensitive pigments: when temperature changes, the state of the color-forming substance inside the microcapsules changes and the color changes. There are two types –
- Reversible thermochromic: color returns when temperature recovers, e.g. 31°C color-changing mugs (black at room temperature, colorful with hot water), color-change phone cases, beer bottle caps;
- Irreversible thermochromic: permanent color change once the threshold is exceeded, used for temperature indication and high-heat warning, e.g. 60°C/210°C high-temperature indicator labels, baking thermometry, chemical equipment monitoring.
Photochromic Ink: Light-Driven Color Change
Photochromic ink uses photochromic molecules that undergo structural isomerization under ultraviolet (sunlight) irradiation, changing their absorption spectrum and thus becoming colored. Indoors or in low light it is colorless or pale; under sunlight/UV it quickly turns blue, purple, red or other colors, and returns to colorless after the light source is removed. Typical applications: color-change t-shirts, UV indicator cards, color-change security marks.

Choose thermochromic ink for temperature-related products or when you want consumers to verify by touch/heat – color-change mugs, phone cases, cold-drink packaging (chilled indicator), hot-drink cup lids (anti-scald), pharmaceutical temperature labels, security labels (finger-press verification), high-temperature equipment indicators.
Choose photochromic ink for outdoor/sunlight products or light-based verification – color-change t-shirts, parasols, sunscreen packaging (UV intensity indicator), color-change toys, outdoor gear, sunlight color-change security marks.

Thermochromic Ink Selection Checklist

FAQ
Can thermochromic and photochromic ink be used on the same product?
Yes. Thermochromic is triggered by temperature and photochromic by light; their mechanisms do not interfere, so they can form a dual-response security system. SJH Ink supports combined designs on one print, subject to printing process and substrate evaluation.
Does thermochromic ink change color in sunlight?
Not by light itself. Thermochromic ink only responds to temperature; if sunlight heats the print (e.g. black areas absorbing heat), color may change indirectly – but that is a temperature effect, not a light effect. For light-triggered color change choose photochromic ink.
How precise are irreversible thermochromic inks?
